Full sutton prisoner accused of Ian Huntley murder bid

THE man charged with murdering a fellow prisoner at Full Sutton prison allegedly tried to kill Soham double murderer Ian Huntley nearly a year earlier.

Damien Fowkes, 35, will stand trial for both crimes at Hull Crown Court in October.

He is alleged to have killed child murderer Colin Hatch, 38, of north London, by strangling him in the East Yorkshire maximum security prison on February 22.

Hatch, who also had convictions for sexually abusing children, was serving a life sentence for the 1994 murder of seven-year-old Sean Williams.

Eleven days before the alleged murder, Fowkes appeared in court and denied the attempted murder of Huntley and an alternative charge of causing wounding with intent to Huntley. The prosecution alleges he made a knife from a toothbrush and a razor blade and slashed Huntley’s throat when both were at Frankland Prison near Durham. Fowkes appeared before Newcastle Crown Court via video link from Wakefield Prison, where he is being held in the close supervision wing.
